Myopia Control

The Canadian Association of Optometrists indicates that nearsightedness, or myopia, affects 30% of Canadians. Myopia is when the eye is shaped longer than the average eye and the image falls in front of the retina thus objects in the distance are blurry. By 2050, half the world’s population will be myopic or nearsighted. With increased near work on devices during the pandemic, we can anticipate even greater increases in nearsightedness than previously predicted. Nearsightedness is influenced by genetics, environment and regular near work.

Experts highlight that the prevalence of myopia is increasing in school-aged children and many children are rapidly progressing. Recent studies have shown there are ways to control the progression of nearsightedness and elongation of the eyeball. Our optometrists can examine the eyes and treat myopic eyes with specific spectacle lenses, multifocal or ortho-k contact lenses, vision therapy and/oreye drops depending on the intensity of treatment. These treatments can decrease or slow down the progression of myopia.

Contact Lenses

We offer a wide range of contact lens services. Did you know if you have astigmatism, you can still wear contact lenses? We can also fit contact lenses for patients who need bifocal powers.

SCLERAL LENSES

Scleral lenses are large diameter hard lenses that rest on the white of the eye (sclera). Scleral lenses are beneficial for patients with corneal irregularities like high astigmatism or keratoconus and patient whose vision has not improved with glasses or traditional soft contact lenses. Patients with severe dry eye also benefit from scleral lenses.

Scleral lenses allow a barrier of fluid between the irregular cornea and the lens itself, allowing light to pass in a straight line without scattering. This allows the patient to experience improved vision with decreased ghosting and glare on images. The optometrist must complete a series of test including a complete eye exam and take appropriate customized measurements in order to obtain a good scleral lens fit.

The clinic staff train the patient on how to insert and remove and clean the lenses. The optometrist will follow up after a few days and then a few months.

RIGID GAS PERMEABLE (RGP) LENSES

Rigid gas permeable lenses or RGPs are small-diameter hard lenses that sit directly on the cornea (clear dome). They allow maximal fluid and oxygen exchange and offer a healthy contact lens option for patients who cannot obtain clear vision with traditional soft contact lenses. A series of customized measurements are completed before a contact lens can be fit. Staff train patients on the appropriate care and insertion and removal methodology. Regular follow-up with the optometrist is important for optimal outcomes.
